BIM in the Field. Success!
Yesterday I went on a visit to one of my construction sites in the west of Singapore. It’s a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility and though it has a compact footprint, it is DENSE with services. On top of the typical ductwork, plumbing, electrical and fire protection, buildings like these are full of processing equipment and piping to do the manufacturing.
We have been interested in leveraging our 3D models for use in defect reporting and inspection, but the problem with many platforms out there is that they would tag issues to spaces in the building rather than elements in the model. It’s a subtle difference, but for these projects, it’s a crucial difference.
We started experimenting with a platform called BIM Anywhere and have been very pleased with the results. The client was super supportive, and our site engineers and sub-contractors have been feeling the benefits from a streamlined inspection workflow. Because the consultant was only delivering NWD files, we also had to buy a copy of iConstruct for Navisworks in order to better organise the model for our purposes.
It took some work but it’s going great now. I love it when a plan comes together.
