Here’s to the crazy ones

It’s funny – I found myself explaining to someone yesterday again about what kind of people keep coming back to our events. I describe them as passionate problem-solvers who like to learn and have fun while they do that.  Today I came across a quote by Steve Jobs that some of you may already know of, but and it made me immediately think of all those other fellow-members of the BILT (nee RTC) community.

To me, it beautifully describes us, and why I believe we can be a powerfully positive force in our industry:

“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward.  While some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

I’m also reminded of David Rendall‘s quote (who was the keynote presenter at RTC Australasia 2016):

“What makes us weird also makes us wonderful. What makes us weak also makes us strong!”

Some of us do see things differently. We have some hyper-focused people among us, who like to continue discussing challenges over drinks late into the night.  Some of us might be a bit odd (yours truly included!).  In thinking about what we can achieve by working together – more broadly than just among architects and engineers – this is what motivates me to be involved and to continue to push for positive change in our industry.

Collectively as a community we may not push the human race forward, but I’ll settle for changing  our AECO/FM industry!  I hope to see all you crazy misfits out there at one event or another in 2017!
