Speaker Spotlight: Keeley Pomeroy

In this week’s blog post we are highlighting  one of our speakers at this year’s BILT ANZ, Keeley Pomeroy, a Quantity Surveyor at AECOM. Presenting two sessions this year, 5D BIM: Our Journey to Digital Delivery and Why BIM Costs Money, a view from a QS, Keeley is ready to share with our BILT community his expertise and experience in the field.

I’m Keeley Pomeroy and I’m a Principal Quantity Surveyor at AECOM and to put it simply I count bricks. I started my adventure into the AEC industry as an apprentice carpenter working for my father’s small construction company. Now remember back when the global finance industry crashed? Well I thought it would be a great opportunity to hang up the tool belt of 5 years and retrain as a QS so I could look to shift from tools to client facing and project delivery. Little known to me at the end of my second year at CPIT one of my tutors said that there was an opportunity to get some work experience at a small local firm know as Davis Langdon. Now this work experience was only a small while after the first major Christchurch earthquake. To cut the story short, they offered me a job as a cadet and Ruamoko (Maori earthquake god) decided that Christchurch should receive one of the largest and most expensive earthquake events to a first world country.

To add to all this I’ve been an amateur MMA fighter (2-0-0) and much more recently I’ve been training competitively in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in which I hold a blue belt grading. I spend most of my time outside of work with my family (wife and two daughters), thinking of food (wife is a chef), thinking about Jiu Jitsu and getting on my Yamaha motorcycle.

Like one of my colleagues and mentors, Steve Appleby, the QS life is a bridge to other horizons in the AEC industry. BIM and QSing goes together like cheese in a cheese burger, we make it happen. I’m driven to get the best project result we can for my clients and digital delivery is strategy that has its challenges, but I’m a firm believer that it’s the right end solution for asset holders and building occupants. Cracking construction big data and linking financial controls into BIM is the big next horizon for me.

Lucky for some, I’m presenting two sessions this year at BILT ANZ. The first is “5D BIM: Our Journey to Digital Delivery” on day 1, which is a session on how and why we needed to plan and change how we achieve our client deliverables. I’ll be sharing the pains and successes we had. Making change is hard, I hope that any firm making change can learn lessons from some of the less than optimal and positive situations that we have been through.

My second session is “Why BIM Costs Money, a view from a QS” on day 2. This session covers from project inception to operations the BIM lifecycle and how the costs stack up. I really hope to bring a different viewpoint to this session and stir a strong discussions during Q&A and into the day.

I really love attending BILT events as I get to be in the company of some of the best AEC digital wizards in the world in which I get lots to take away and reinforce heaps of learnings and inspiration. Can’t wait to see you all there!
